What happens in our services?
Eucharist
The Eucharist (also called Holy Communion, Mass, or The Lord's Supper) takes place on most days. Containing Bible readings and prayers, it is celebrated by Christians around the world as a memorial of the death and resurrection of Jesus, in response to his words at the final meal he shared with his disciples, 'Do this in remembrance of me.'
All are welcome at the service, and if you don't receive communion, you may still come forward for a prayer of blessing at that point of the service if you wish.
The service lasts for around 30 minutes and is usually held in the Nave of the Cathedral, but please feel free to ask at the Welcome Desk where to go when you arrive.
Cathedral Eucharist
A Cathedral Eucharist is the same as a Eucharist, with the addition of music sung by the Cathedral Choir, organ music, congregational hymns, and a sermon. This takes place on Sunday mornings (and on special occasions such as Christmas or Easter) in the Nave, and usually lasts between 60–90 minutes.
Morning Prayer
A short, spoken service of prayers, psalms and Bible readings, of no more than 30 minutes. Please feel free to ask at the Welcome Desk where to go when you arrive.
Choral Evensong
It is part of our Jewish roots to offer praise and prayer as the day draws to an end. Joining our prayers with the music sung by the Cathedral Choir, Choral Evensong combines the traditional Christian offices of Evening Prayer (Vespers) and Night Prayer (Compline) and their distinctive canticles, the Magnificat (The Song of Mary, Luke 1.46–55) and the Nunc Dimittis (The Song of Simeon, Luke 2.29–32), into one service.
This service usually lasts around 45 minutes, and takes place while the Cathedral Choir is in residence during term-time. Occasionally, visiting choirs will also sing outside of term-time.
Evening Prayer
Equivalent to Choral Evensong and lasting no more than 30 minutes. As at Morning Prayer and Choral Evensong, it follows a recognisable shape, drawing together Bible readings, psalms, and canticles, much of which are said by congregation and minister together.
Our services are free of charge to attend, and everyone is welcome.
