Plans are taking shape for Leicester's St George's Day festival, with a new location – and a new format – for the popular event in 2024.

From this year, the city council will host the one-day event in the historic area around the Cathedral in the heart of Leicester's 'Old Town', with a packed programme of indoor and outdoor events on Saturday 20 April.

Heritage tourism venues in the Old Town, including the medieval Guildhall, Leicester Cathedral and the King Richard III Visitor Centre, will all be taking part, marking the day with a range of family-friendly events.

While details of the programme are still being finalised, the events – which will celebrate the area's history and heritage – are likely to include re-enactment activities, ale trails, a medieval-themed market and plenty of free activities for children and young people.

Cllr Adam Clarke, deputy city mayor for climate, economy and culture, said:

"We've got plans for an expanded festival this year, which we hope will feature a medieval market, heritage films, street theatre and – of course – St George and a dragon.

"In its new home in the Old Town, our St George's Day festival will take place in an area that's rich in history – and we'll also be able to offer a wider range of activities, thanks to our partnership with heritage venues nearby.

"It's always a popular event and I hope that its new format, across multiple venues, will attract even more visitors ­– and encourage them to discover all that Leicester's Old Town has to offer."

Leicester's St George's Day festival will run from 12.00 until 5.00pm on Saturday 20 April.
