Our Cathedral is an important gateway into the city, bringing in 130,000 cultural tourists annually, many of whom are coming to see the tomb of Richard III. The Grade II* cathedral dates back to the thirteenth century but, as experienced today, is of the Victorian and Arts & Crafts eras. The site itself, dating back to pre-Roman times, is surrounded by medieval and Georgian buildings which collectively form the popularly named ‘cultural quarter.’
Leicester Cathedral Revealed is our £11.3m visionary project to restore our wonderful Cathedral, protecting its historic setting and renewing its sacred spaces. We will also be creating something new, a Heritage Learning Centre on the site of the old song school, with many features including an orientation and exhibition area, a learning space, much needed lavatories and an accessible lift.
We plan to complete the Heritage Learning Centre in early 2021, and the restoration of the Cathedral by early 2022.
