Asylum seekers get a very bad press, but in fact they are one of the most disadvantaged minorities in the UK today. Leicester City of Sanctuary is a secular charity that sets out to support and welcome asylum seekers and new refugees to our city and county.
We are extremely grateful to St Martins House for providing a venue for our activities, free of charge. We are entirely volunteer-run and we welcome people from all faiths and none.
We run a drop-in centre on Wednesday at which we offer a simple lunch, craft activities, games, entertainment and the opportunity to relax and chat in friendly surroundings. We organise occasional outings, provide sewing, IT and English classes and have a scheme called N.E.S.T. (New Evidence Search Team) which helps clients find and marshal evidence to support their applications and appeals for leave to remain. We also have a team of speakers who give talks to schools and groups explaining what it is really like to seek asylum in 21st century Britain.’
