Leicester Welcome Project gives immediate practical support to asylum seekers living in and near Leicester, with gifts of food, clothes and toiletries. The Project can also try and help people when they are having difficulties; making phone calls, writing letters, advocating for them, referring them to appropriate organisations and giving informal advice.
There is a drop-in session open to all asylum seekers every Thursday morning, 10.00am – 12.30pm at St Martins House (7 Peacock Lane, Leicester LE1 5PZ).
People from many different backgrounds volunteer for the Welcome Project, and volunteers with language skills or who are asylum seekers or refugees are particularly welcome. No experience of volunteering in this work is necessary; all volunteers will go through a simple selection process and will be provided with basic training. If you can offer at least half a day a month, the Project would like to have you on its team!
Donations are welcomed – non-perishable foodstuffs are of particular value, and there is always a need for toiletries and nappies in all sizes. Financial gifts are also very welcome – please send cheques payable to ‘Leicester Welcome Project’ to St Martins House, 7 Peacock Lane, Leicester LE1 5PZ.
